The ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Walls is undertaking research designed to advance the understanding of plant cell wall biology and will define the regulatory mechanisms that control molecular, enzymic and cellular processes involved in the synthesis, deposition, remodelling and depolymerisation of cell wall polysaccharides. Techniques include biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, physicochemistry, microscopy, functional genomics (includes glycomics, proteomics and metabolomics) and bioinformatics.

Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics
The Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG) is a national research centre aimed at increasing the tolerance of wheat and barley to environmental stresses such as drought and salinity and improving the nutrient use efficiency of these economically important cereals. With research nodes at the Universities of Melbourne, Adelaide, South Australia and Queensland, the ACPFG has a strong commitment to training and developing students, providing future scientists for Australia.

Self Incompatibility Systems
Wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) is one of the worst weeds of the Australian grain industry, costing tens of millions of dollars a year to control and rapidly developing resistance to many of the herbicides currently used to control it. Working with Dr Andrew Young of the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry we hope to exploit a phenomenon known as "self incompatibility" (SI) to create a novel plant contraceptive that is capable of controlling wild radish.
Students will engage in a range of different techniques and laboratory skills including molecular biology and protein biochemistry. You will also have the opportunity to study population genetics and plant reproduction.

Metabolomics Australia
Metabolomics and Proteomics are fields of research used in SYSTEMS BIOLOGY to study the underlying mechanisms behind cellular processes.
In the School of Botany, we use leading edge techniques and instrumentation in conjunction with model plants such as Arabidopsis amd grasses (cereals) to study fundamental processes in plant growth and development.
